Turning Your Home Into A Safe, Serene Haven
Our houses are more important than ever, with most of us spending more time at home than usual. Home should be a special place where you feel comfortable, relaxed and safe. In this guide, we’ll explore some simple steps you can take to turn your home into a haven.
Protecting against theft
Nobody wants to think about their home being targeted by thieves, but sadly, this is a reality that we have to face. We tend to think of burglaries as incidents that happen to other people, but anyone could find themselves in a situation where thieves have broken into their home. The good news is that there are several ways to bolster your defences and minimise risks. From smart alarm systems and outdoor lighting to gates and fences, secure windows and doors and CCTV, you can protect your nest and deter thieves. If you have an alarm, a doorbell camera, a gate or security lighting, a thief may think twice about attempting to get into your home. You can also make life more difficult by hiding valuable items and ensuring that all your windows and doors are locked before you go out or go to bed.
Another measure to employ is to avoid giving thieves clues as to when you will be out or away on holiday. Many of us enjoy posting videos and photos and tagging ourselves at locations when we go away or we’re out for the night. Make sure your social media accounts are set to private. If you post photos and your profile is public, opportunistic thieves will be able to see that you are not at home. It’s also beneficial to cancel deliveries if you’re planning a trip and to leave a car in the driveway.

Promoting health and wellbeing
Many of us are paying more attention to our physical and mental health as a result of the pandemic. There are multiple things you can do to make your home a safe, healthy environment. Tackle issues such as damp and mould, contact pest control professionals if you have concerns about uninvited visitors and try to stay warm during the winter. Pests and mould can contribute to health issues and it can be difficult to relax and feel calm if you’re freezing cold. Use blankets and throws to stay cosy, keep the windows and internal doors closed and plug gaps in walls and window and door frames to prevent warm air from escaping. Look into insulation options and find out if you are eligible for financial assistance.
Our homes should be tranquil places where we feel happy and content. To boost mental health, create serene spots that are designed for relaxation and make space for hobbies and activities that make you feel good. Use colour to set the tone and design zones for different activities. Your bedroom, for example, should be a calming place. Opt for neutral tones and colours, such as green, blue and purple, which are proven to soothe. In social areas, choose uplifting, energising colours, including yellow and orange.
Minimising the risk of accidents
Whether you live alone, you share your home with your partner, or you have children or pets, it’s hugely beneficial to try to be proactive in preventing accidents. Some incidents are inevitable, but there are often steps you can take to reduce risks and eliminate hazards. If you have small children, use stair gates and socket guards to prevent falls and electrical injuries and keep cleaning products and medicines in locked cupboards. Tidy cords and wires away and cover sharp corners of tables and other pieces of furniture. Maintain your flooring, and address any issues with carpets or floorboards. If your carpets are frayed or ripped, or you have loose boards, for example, the risk of tripping will be higher.
Fire safety
Many homeowners have a fear of fire. Although house fires are uncommon, they do happen and they can be devastating. To minimise risks, make sure you have a smoke detector on every floor, check them regularly and buy a fire blanket. Don’t leave pots and pans unattended in the kitchen, take care when cooking and turn electrical appliances off at the socket when you have finished using them.

Many of us are spending more time at home than ever before. We all want our homes to be safe, serene havens. As a homeowner, it’s beneficial to think about steps you can take to create a healthy, happy environment. Invest in home security, tackle issues that could increase the risk of health problems, create areas to indulge hobbies and induce calm and relaxation and minimise the risk of accidents and injuries.
