The girls second day in nursery
Yesterday our twin girls started nursery school. You can click here to read about how they got on during their first day.
As I was taking the girls on my own today for the first time my husband decided to take a back seat and let me talk to them about Nursery. I told them both that they could go to nursery again today and that they could take their favourite toys with them so that they could show them their pegs where they hang their bags because their toys didn’t get to see them yesterday because we didn’t bring them with us.
This idea seemed to please them both for a little while and they said they were happy to go to nursery.
However after breakfast R seemed a bit more upset about going and kept saying that she didn’t want to go again.
Time for a new tactic!
I decided to give R a toy of mine from when I was a baby and I told R that she could put it in her backpack and look after it for me whilst she was at nursery. M overheard and wanted to do the same thing so I found a small teddy bear and told her it was daddy’s baby bear and that she could look after it for daddy whilst she was at nursery.
Both of the girls seemed happy about this so they put the toys in their backpacks.
When daddy left for work, I got the girls dressed for school and for about half an hour both girls didn’t say that they didn’t want to go to nursery. That didn’t last long though and as soon as they got in the car R said that she didn’t want to go.
It’s a funny feeling being a parenting and listening to your child saying that they don’t want to go to nursery school because obviously I want to encourage her to go, but then I don’t want to make her upset either. I was feeling very anxious and a bit tearful myself so I needed to try to appear calm and happy for them both.
I then went into the main room at the nursery and found a teacher. I didn’t want to leave the girls standing in the room on their own so I thought it was important to take them to a teacher.
I told the teacher that R was a bit teary eyed. The teacher was really good and got some puzzles out then held out her arms for the girls to go towards her.
I took that moment to give the girls a big hug and kiss and then I left.
R was a bit teary-eyed so I thought I’d best go before she started crying because if she had started crying I think it would have been harder for me to leave.
As I was walking out, I definitely felt a bit teary. I didn’t cry, but I was definitely on the verge!
When I got home I didn’t know what to do it myself. I hoovered our living room, tidied the kitchen and living room and then spent the rest of my time wandering around the house!
The teacher told me yesterday that about 10.50am the girls could have a snack so before we went to nursery I told the girls that if they stayed a bit longer than they did yesterday they’d get to have a snack at nursery today.
10.30am passed, then 11am and then I kind of knew that they’d make it to the end of the session.
I left my home around 11.15 and was the first parent at the gates!
I could see the girls in the playground lining up with the other children ready to go back into the main building. They saw me and started waving!
When they came out, M was a bit upset, but she had a handful of drawings that she’d done with the teacher and R had quite a few too.
When we got home they both told me all about their day. They painted some bears, drew pictures and played outside.
They both seemed more upbeat about nursery and I’m pleased to say that for the rest of today they didn’t once say that they didn’t want to go to nursery. Of course that could all change tomorrow though!

Its hard when you have to encourage your kids to do something they dont seam to like. The idea of looking after your toys is a good one. #binkylinky

It is hard isn't it. They seemed to like the idea of looking after our toys. Now I just need to think of a new tactic for each day next week! Thanks for your comment x

Ah it's just so hard to leave them when they are upset isn't it, makes you feel like a criminal. I know for a fact that my girls started having a whale of a time the minute I left though, so hopefully yours will too! It sounds like you have some great distraction techniques to help ease them in, keep up the good work, I promise it gets easier! Becky x #binkylinky

Hi Becky, thanks for your comment. It is super tough. It makes me feel so bad. The first day when I picked them up I couldn't stop cuddling them and telling that I loved them. Why do they have to grow up! xx

I think for the first day, kids tend to like the newness, then when they realise they have to go everyday, that's when the problems start. Hopefully, they will get used to it and be ok about going. Thanks for hosting the #binkylinky

It's so hard when they say they don't want to do something or go somewhere as we want to support them. Well done on helping them want to go – soon they will be running in without thinking #binkylinky xx

This is so hard. I found it really difficult to do but you are doing a good thing by finding ways to help them get over this hurdle. Kirsten

Everyone takes time to adjust to a new situation and new people, but it will get easier for all of you. It's also good preparation for big school. Wishing you all well for next week. #binkylinky

Hi Mrs Tubbs, thanks for your comment. Yeah, I guess so. I hope it gets easier soon. I agree it is good preparation for big school which is the main reason I'm keen on them attending nursery. I think if they didn't go to nursery, big school would be a real shocker x
