The Benefits of Journaling for Children
There are lots of reasons why parents should encourage their youngster to keep a journal, or a diary as it’s more commonly known. Journaling is, however, usually less personal, and more specific than a diary. For instance, your child could keep a science journal to support their academic progression. I have teamed up with a private school in North London to explore the benefits of journaling for children in further detail below.

Reduces Stress & Anxiety
Organising their thoughts on paper is a great way for children to practise mindfulness and take their mind away from anything that could be causing stress or anxiety. It allows them to rationalise their thoughts and feelings and perhaps view things from other perspectives, which allows them to look at certain things with a level head.
Enhances Writing Skills
Journaling is great for helping children develop their writing skills and become better with spelling and grammar. This is great for their overall education because they need to be good at writing down answers and expressing their opinions in written form. What’s more, better writing skills lead to better communication in general.
Inspires Creativity
Creativity is important for children because it fosters their mental growth and allows them to try new ideas, while also practising problem solving. With that said, it’s important for parents to encourage their children to partake in creative activities, such as journaling.
A Break from Technology
Nowadays, most children spend far too much of their time glued to some for of digital device. Encouraging them to spend some time journaling each day is a great way to get them off those devices and do something more inspiring and productive.
Encourages Positivity
Oftentimes, journals are used to promote positivity and optimism. For instance, your child could keep a gratitude journal, in which they jot down some of the things they feel thankful for that day. This will help them develop an affirmative outlook. Alternatively, they could keep a journal of their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments, which also heightens their feelings of self-assurance and confidence.
