The 3 Kinds of Presents You Should Never Give

February 8, 2017

When you give someone a gift, it is meant to make them happy, right? Or at least, you just don’t want them to be unhappy or sad about it. One thing that I think is important to remember when giving gifts is that it can be a powerful form of communication. So it could be time to sit back and think about the message that the gifts you give out are giving? Are they saying thoughtful and helpful or more of just last minute and impersonal? With that in mind, here are some of the worst kinds of gift that you can give. Then you’ll know what to avoid next time!

An obvious re-gift

We all re-gift from time to time, surely? Sometimes people don’t get the memo about the point above, and you are left with something that you won’t use. So it makes sense to pass it onto someone else, especially if you know that they will make use of it. What is bad is when it is so obvious that it was just something you didn’t want. If the recipient was present when you got the gift originally, then don’t pass it on to them. Also, watch out for things that might have been embossed or personalised. Unless they have the same initials or name, then it is a no-no! You could check out this post for the rules on re-gifting www.daveramsey.com/blog/10-rules-of-regifting if you’re unsure.

Clothing

When clothing is done right, it can be a really great gift. But for many people, they just can’t get it right. If you’re unsure of someone’s size, then it is always good to go down one size smaller. Or better yet, get them a gift card from a certain store. Then they can choose the styles that the like in their size, but still in the original store that you chose for them. So there is a little thought that has gone into it. I think one of the only exceptions is when an item of clothing is personalised. Say you want to get your daughter or niece a t-shirt as they’re going to be a big sister, from somewhere like www.zoeyspersonalizedgifts.com/big-sister-to-be-t-shirts/, then it is specific enough to get it ordered for them. Otherwise be careful about what clothing items you choose to give as gifts.

A gift that is perfect for you

When you choose a gift for someone else, you need to think about what they would like and have them in mind when you choose it. If you just go around thinking what you would like, it can be really obvious. You might really like a piece of jewellery or a kitchen gadget. But the latter is kind of pointless if you know your best friend hates cooking and you get it for them. It shows when you haven’t put any effort into buying a gift. If you’re stuck, then getting something generic like candles or something edible, is better than getting them something that they won’t really enjoy.
