Teaching toddlers to ride a bike
Around Easter time my husband and I bought R and M their very first proper bike. A 12” one from Tesco. It was in the half-price sale which is always great when you have twins and have to buy two of pretty much everything!
R and M have had some practice with bikes. They’ve had a balance bike each and currently have toddle bikes, although at three years old they’re quickly outgrowing them!
Since we moved house almost two months ago I’ve been wanting to get them bikes. This is mainly because it’s a bit further to walk to the shops and parks, but also because they’ll be starting nursery in September and seeing as we live on the same road as the nursery it’d be good for them to be able to ride their bikes there.
We’ve had scooters in the past which has helped me to determine how both girls are when it comes to things such as bike riding. M took to her scooter really well. R, however was a little more cautious and if she fell off she’d be quite reluctant to get back on again.
When we first took the girls out on their new bikes it was a pretty funny experience. Both girls kept peddling backwards or just decided to do nothing meaning me and their daddy would just push them around on them!
Thankfully by the second time we went out with them they both managed to peddle in the right direction and even cycled a very short distance on their own. Yay!
Although my husband and I learnt a very valuable lesson on that second occasion which was not to venture too far as we both ended up having to push them back home on their bikes which isn’t much fun when you live at the top of a hill and when the bikes don’t have parent handles on them! (**runs to search Google for parent handles!**)
The bikes we’ve bought them obviously have stabilisers on at the moment which is great because it means they can’t really fall off them.
I naively thought that it would be quite easy getting them to ride a bike, but I’s proving a bit more difficult than I’d first thought!
I’m making sure they get lots of practise, but when it’s just me on my own it’s almost impossible to do so I usually have to wait until the weekend when my husband is home from work to help.

Aw what a cute photo they look adorable on there bikes. God it is so long ago since my oldest got her first bike i can't remember how i got her riding it but i think it took a few weeks for her to get the hang of xx
