Review: DEXA SCAN: Body Fat, Muscle, and Bone Testing #AD

As someone who likes to exercise, it’s important to me that I’m able to look after my body properly. In doing so I can perform at my best, so when I was recently invited to have a DEXA scan I was keen to find out more. A DEXA Scan is used for basic body fat measurement. It’s a way to precisely measure body composition such as muscle, fat and bone. It’s often used by athletes to pick up muscle asymmetries between their left and right sides. This is important to me because when I was training for my first half… [Read More]

Specsavers Eye Test and Frames Review

I was recently contacted by Specsavers and asked if I would like to review a pair of frames and visit my local store for a complimentary eye test (usual cost £20). As someone who wears prescription glasses to drive and watch TV etc, I was more than happy to accept.  I booked my eye test over the phone and the man I spoke to was very friendly, helpful and informative. When I walked into Specsavers I was directed upstairs and greeted by a man at the desk who took some of my details before asking me to take a seat… [Read More]

JP’s Story: Part 3: Vicious Cycles

To read part two, click here. May 2014 I have always had an irregular cycle, since the beginning of time. At least, that’s how long it feels. It was not a problem until I could not easily conceive. Until now. Miss J was a surprise. A wonderful surprise. Discovered at 20 weeks, producing no symptoms and no bump. An absence of periods for that length of time was not unusual for me. I suspected nothing. And her easy conception allayed any fears regarding my fertility. It would appear this is true of the medical professionals as well as of my… [Read More]

JP’s Story: Part 2: Ultrasound Scan

To read part one click here. April 2014 Today I had an ultrasound at my GP surgery. The procedure was identical to that of an antenatal scan albeit with one crucial difference. There was no baby. Of course there was no baby. We are still trying but nothing is happening and my cycle remains stubbornly erratic. And so an ultrasound was arranged and has now taken place. Alongside this scan, I was offered a pelvic scan. This is not something I was immediately familiar with but I was informed that it was an internal scan and that, as it would… [Read More]

Vicky's IVF Story

Hubby and I got married in 2008. A year later we were having the conversation about trying for a baby. Well,  maybe I was having the conversation and hubby was just nodding politely! Anyway I decided we’d start trying for a baby in 2010. I’d just turned 31 and thought it was a near perfect time, I was in a good position at work again so we were ready. We tried for over a year and experienced the monthly hope that my period wouldn’t come and I’d get that positive pregnancy test, but nothing happened. I got to the point… [Read More]

The Two Week Wait

The Two Week Wait Thread It felt like we had waited so long to join the two week wait thread on the fertility forum and now we could finally do so! Introducing ourselves and telling everyone our story, I met a lot of couples on the two week wait. The first page of the forum was filled with everyone’s names, followed by their test date and either a happy ‘cheerleader’ smiley or an animated ‘BFN’ (Big Fat Negative) smiley.  It started of pretty good, lots of cheer-leading, shall we say but the further down the list you went, the less cheer-leading there… [Read More]
