SEO for bloggers
As a blogger I’ve heard the term SEO bandied around quite a lot. On twitter, various Facebook blogging groups and forums. If you’re a new blogger it can be quite intimidating trying to keep up with keywords, SEO and monetisation, but it’s really quite simple.
SEO is an abbreviation of Search Engine Optimisation, which is basically the process of affecting the visibility of a website or web page in a search engines unpaid results (also known as organic results).
The idea is to get to the top of the first page of google without having to pay for it. If you’re at the top, you’re blog is more visible meaning you’re more likely to be found on the internet as no-one wants to scroll through a load of pages to find what they’re looking for!
So now that we have a basic understanding of what SEO is, how do you go about creating a post with SEO in mind?
If you’re looking for a more advanced learning experience of SEO than there are various SEO courses available online, but in today’s post we’ll just talk about the basics.

First up, you’ll need to create good content and write regularly. Creating good content should be pretty easy. If you already have a blog, then you’re probably already doing it. The key is to simply write well.
You don’t need to write every day, but be consistent. I’ve been blogging for almost years now so I do write every da, but when I first started I would go weeks, even months, in between posts. I find it helpful to have a blog schedule so I know what post is going out on what day. You may also want to have some ‘set days’ that you’ll post on. So maybe Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This way your readers will know when they can expect a new post from you, but you’re also being consistent.
Write about what you enjoy writing about, but try to be relevant. If you’re a beauty blogger and the majority of your posts are about make-up and you then decide to publish a guest post about the best TV’s, that’s not really relevant, plus it’ll probably contain links all over the place which will make it look pretty spammy too.
One of my welsh blogger friends, Georgina, has written an amazing post about SEO which you can read here. She gives tips such as the importance of trying to put the name of a product in the title because it helps Google work out what it’s about and if it’s relevant to what the person has searched for. So if I wrote a review on a coffee machine, I’d probably put the brand of coffee machine into the title along with the words ‘coffee machine’.
Using headings in posts are pretty important too. They’ll help google to understand what the main topic of your post is plus it’ll help in your ranking. Subheadings are a good idea too.
Another important aspect to consider is the length of your post. You don’t want it to be too short, but on the other hand make it too long and your readers could may well loose interest. If you’ve already written a similar post on the same topic, you can also include a link back to that post in your new post.
So there we are! SEO in a nutshell! I hope these tips have been useful!
