Many people in the UK like to go abroad during winter in search of some winter sunshine. I totally understand this and have been known to do the same myself.

A quick flight to Spain or the South of France etc, but I’m slowly coming to terms with staycations. A staycation is where you holiday in your own country rather than go abroad. There are so many benefits to staycations. For starters it’s better for the environment as it helps to reduce your carbon footprint, plus it’s usually cheaper too!

Living in Wales means that we have so many amazing places right on our doorstop. With that in mind, here are a few of my favourite UK winter getaways. For more inspiration on winter activities home or away, click here to check out a handy map by Regatta.

Star Gazing in the Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons is a short 20-30 minute drive from my house, yet upon arrival it feels as though we’ve landed in a far away country. The vast mountainous landscape, national park and the many trails makes the Brecon Beacons perfect for families, couples and individuals looking for some outdoor adventures. What’s more, the Brecon Beacons is also perfect for star gazing. Just don’t forget your telescope!

Family Fun at the Farm

Folly Farm is slightly further away at around two hours by car, but it’s a great place to spend a day. You could even make the most of it by making a weekend of it and exploring the surrounding area.

Folly Farm is in Pembrokeshire and has so many different animals there to see. From rhinos and lions to meerkats and giraffes. The surrounding area of Pembrokeshire also has lots to keep the family entertained from beaches to castles and more!

Llangollen

My final destination is Llangollen which is situated on the calm waters of the River Dee in North Wales. There’s plenty to do from long walks, cosy pub lunches and there’s even an old fashioned railway which draws in tourists and locals on a regular basis.
