How to host the perfect family BBQ + Menu Ideas

June 24, 2021

While the sunny, warm days have abruptly stopped to allow for rain to pour down the skies, I’m hoping for the weather to quickly change again (for the better!). As a Brit, we know that we need to make the most out of the sunny days we do have. This means… sun’s out, barbecue’s out!

I can’t tell you how much I look forward to summer days just for the barbecues with the family. Plus, after being stuck at home and far away from everyone, it really feels special to get together once again. That’s why it’s so important to me that I cater for all my guests by making sure the food has halal certification for my guests who need it to be. Can you think of a better way to have a much awaited family get-together than inviting everyone for a big ol’ BBQ? I can’t! Today, I’ve partnered up with Springvale Foods, UK food wholesaler, to share with you some tips on how to host the perfect family BBQ.

With that said, if you’re more of a sit back and relax host, then you should totally check out Poptop. You can book a private BBQ chef which is perfect for all occasions – whether it’s a family get together, party or a special celebration, you can find some great chefs at Poptop.

Be ready before the guests arrive.

As Travel Mamas recommend, it’s essential to prep food before your guests arrive. “Make sure all the food is ready to go on the grill when the guests arrive and that any side dishes are assembled, cooked as needed and out on display.” Preparing as much as possible beforehand will make a world of difference! So, make the burger patties, chop lettuce and tomatoes and have some nibbles ready! Not only will this make sure nobody gets hungry but it will also guarantee you will enjoy your time with your guests (and not just run around your house getting things ready whilst making sure everyone is happy – we’ve all been there!).

Put together a great menu.

Great company, great food – what’s there not to like? Take some time to think about the menu in-line with the lifestyle and food requirements of your guests. Perhaps some of your friends are vegetarian, be sure to have some options for them. If some of your guests are gluten-free, don’t forget to get some gluten-free goodies for them. To ensure everyone is happy and well fed, go for simple and delicious recipes that most people love, here are some menu ideas:

Starter.

Deep in Mummy Matters shared a variety of BBQ nibbles perfect to serve before the main or to nibble alongside your main barbecued foods. Her selection includes one of my favourite starters, including Spanish melon with Serrano ham as well as great ideas that I can’t wait to try, such as figs-in-a-blanket with goat’s cheese – sounds divine, doesn’t it?

If you are too busy doing the main and dessert, ditch the starter and instead, place some chips and dips on the table and encourage guests to help themselves. I’d recommend Eat Real Sour Cream and Chive Hummus Chips or Savourmiths Italian Cheese and Port Potato Crisps.

Main.

You can grill your favourite meats, fish, veggies and even fruit! Artisan Grains Moroccan Spiced Veggie Gluten Free Burger Mix or Artisan Grains Sweet Chilli Veggie Gluten Free Burger Mix are both great options for your gluten-free guests and vegan guests (to be honest anyone will love these delicious burger mixes!).

Dessert.

This article on Eating Well recommends going for desserts that can be made ahead, such as brownies or other finger foods that involve zero slicing, “which means less mess and dirty dishes to deal with at the end.” To make things even easier, go for a cheeky dessert mix where you only need to add a few ingredients. I’d go for the Superfoods Bakery Organic Brownie Mix or the Bottled Baking Company Raspberry and White Chocolate Tray Bake Mix.

Drinks.

It’s essential to keep everyone hydrated and cool on warm, sunny days. Have some cocktail mixes ready for those who drink alcohol and don’t forget to put out some alcohol-free options for your younger guests and those who live an alcohol-free life! Cawston Press Cloudy Apple Drink and Belvoir Freshly Squeezed Lemonade are both great refreshing drink options for any summer day!
