Helping your child become more environmentally conscious

October 5, 2022

Teaching children to be aware of the world around them is a duty of every parent. This includes respecting the environment and living in a way that is sustainable. It is important to do our bit to take care of the environment as well as teaching younger generations how to follow. As young children, must of us were taught about what the effects of global warming could look like if we didn’t take care of the planet. Now as parents, it seems we are having to teach young ones to be aware of the changes the Earth is going through and what needs to be done to slow down and prevent further damage from occurring. It has become a vital part of the curriculum for children to understand the importance of climate change. However, it is even more important for you as a parent to teach your child how to become more environmentally conscious.

Start by getting them outdoors. The best way to make your child more environmentally conscious is by surrounding them with what needs to be saved. Take time out as a family to complete activities such as rock pooling and allow your child’s inquisitiveness to guide the way.

Get them to help you with recycling. Recycling is something that is very important when it comes to taking care of the environment so it is worth teaching your child about it from a young age. Get them to help you rinse out and recycle household rubbish. Talking about the process and why it is better for it not to go to the landfill is a great way to get them interested. Set the example and opt for refillable skincare that’s both vegan and won’t end up in the landfill.

Be aware of the energy used at home. Talk about how both you and your child can be more mindful about saving energy through turning off electronics that aren’t in use and taking shorter showers.

It may seem small at first but eventually your child will realise that doing their bit will make all the difference at the end of the day.
