Fairtrade is a word that appears on TV, in magazines and on radio quite often, but you do actually know what it means?
What is Fairtrade?
Well, put simply fairtrade is about good working conditions, better prices and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s not something many people think of when buying products, but it’s really easy to identify Fairtrade products, and of course you’ll also have the knowledge that you’re doing something for a good cause.
Products made with Fairtrade ingredients have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. These standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects.
Why does Fairtrade exist?
Fairtrade exists in order to support the development of thriving farming and worker communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. (Source: Fair-trade)
How do I know if something I buy is Fairtrade?
Many products such as tea and coffee are fairtrade, and these products will be marked with the Fairtrade mark.
By buying products with the Fairtrade mark you’ll be supporting farmers and workers, as they work to improve their lives and communities.

You might be surprised to learn that some of your favourite brands and products may be Fairtrade. One of my favourite coffee brands is Gourmesso.
They offer alternative FAIRTRADE certified coffee capsules for Nespresso machines, priced 30% less than Nespresso. Why not take a look through your cupboards to see what’s Fairtrade? If nothing is, why not try looking for an alternative next time you do your food shop?
Why is Fairtrade important?
Small-Scale farmers and workers are among the most marginalised groups globally. Fair-trade works to benefit these people by enabling them to maintain their livelihood and reach their potential.
