We’re so lucky in Wales that we have so many places of interest in close proximity to our homes. From castles and ruins, to museums and parks, I love a good day out and if it’s free then even better!
This half term we’ve really been making the most of the good weather and getting outdoors as much as possible. My girls love going to the local park then walking back home by the stream so they can play poo sticks!
I think it’s so important to get kids outdoors rather than have the cooped up inside in front of the TV. Of course, the TV has a time and place too though! I mean we all need some peace and quiet for a few moments so we can get things done around the house!
Talking of free days out, I’ve recently discovered that Brecon Careg and Cadw have teamed up to offer families the chance to save money when they visit a number of Cadw sites across Wales this summer.
All you need to do is grab one of their promotional bottles which gives you the offer to take one child for free to 22 castles and historic sites across Wales. For the full list of places you can visit, please click here.
One of the places on the list is Castell Coch. It’s around a ten minute drive away from our home and it’s one of our favourite places to visit! You can read my review of Castell Coch here. It’s a great day out for all the family.
You can explore the Castle and it’s grounds, giving children the chance to learn some history and have a run around. There are also interactive areas where children can press buttons and listen to facts, plus they have colouring sheets which I’m sure most kids love. I know mine do!
If it’s a rainy day, don’t let that stop the fun! Simply grab your wellies and mac, and off you go! If you don’t want to brave the rain however, I do have some alternative activities to share with you to keep the kids busy before they go back to school.
Brecon Careg have created a number of Cadw-inspired craft videos. Our favourites are the princess cuffs and castle.
They look really easy to make using just a few craft supplies, and the great thing about them is that kids can pretty much do everything themselves with adult supervision.
