When you’re decorating a room for twins, you need to think in pairs. There are two beds, two dressers, two lamps, two personalities, and two of everything to keep in mind. Needless to say, the whole idea of bedroom design for twins can feel overwhelming, but it can also be so much fun!
As you embark on your twin bedroom design endeavour, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
Keep it simple
Before committing to a bedroom design, keep in mind that children’s tastes and interests can change nearly as often as the ocean’s tide. Be sure to choose designs and colours that are simple enough to accommodate your children’s ever-changing likes and dislikes. A room that is character-themed, for example, will often be outgrown in less than a year.
Create a personal area
When they’re younger, personal space will probably not be an issue for your twins. Keep in mind, however, that their need for personal space and privacy will change as they grow older. Having an area that is personal for them and catered to their own personality will help to provide them with their own sense of individuality and privacy when needed. Their bed and its surrounding area is an excellent place for this.
Create a common area
Equally important as the personal area, the common area is a great place for games, books, puzzles, and any other common interests that they share. For the most part, this should be an open area where they can play together. A toy chest or a few bins full of their favourite shared objects and a couple of bean bag chairs are all you need to get the job done.
Provide them with an excellent sleep environment

Keep functionality in mind
With two young kids in one room, the issue of space can creep forward. Will the twins’ room allow for two beds side by side, or do bunk beds make more sense? Provide individual work spaces
Whether they are in their preschool years or have hit their teens, your twins will need their own space to work. Providing individual areas where they can create their crayon masterpieces or finish that paper due for school is essential. Similar to the idea of bunkbeds, you might want to consider having two separate lofts. Your twins can sleep up above and have their own workspace below their sleeping area. A design like this can be an excellent way to save space and could earn some major “cool parent” points from your kids!
