Anything is Possible! Accessible Travel in the UK

Travelling is often thought of as something that the young do. Not necessarily just the young, rich and famous. Plenty of students take gap years to travel the world, explore hidden cities and experience one in a lifetime opportunities.

Travel, however, isn’t just for the young. You see anything is possible regardless of age and ability. Just because you’re a little older, that doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love and that includes travel. There’s always a way!

#TravelforAll is a campaign which is currently being run by Mobility Nationwide. It’s a brilliant campaign that aims to show you that whether you’re travelling by public transport or your own fully-accessible vehicle, there are various great days out across the UK that can be enjoyed by all.

My mother-in-law is in her late eighties. In her youth she certainly liked to travel. She even lived in Australia for while. I can see that she misses travelling and although she perhaps cannot travel as much as she used to, there are some great locations across the UK that she can visit.

Here are just a few:

Caernarfon Castle, Wales

We live in Cardiff, Wales so Caernarfon Castle is definitely a place that we can visit. It’s just over a four hour car journey, but with plenty of comfort and tea breaks, we could make it there in no time!

The great thing about Caernarfon Castle is that it has a purpose built ramp, allowing all visitors a chance to access it’s inner wards.

This medieval fortress is in North Wales so we could even make a weekend of it!

Cambrian Mountains, Wales

Another welsh attraction are the Cambrian Mountains. This set of mountain ranges offers fantastic walks, bike trails and fantastic views.

Now you may think that mountains is probably not the best location for taking those with mobility issues, however you’d be wrong! Within the mountain range you’ll find Bwlch Nant yr Arian forest park. It’s one of the best places in Wales to spot Red Kites and the great thing is that some of the walks have now been specifically built to accommodate wheelchair access allowing everyone to take in the stunning views!

London

Of course if you were looking to travel further afield then there’s no better place in my opinion than London! Yes, it’s busy and noisy, but that’s London! That’s what makes it great!

You could visit London Zoo which has made movements in recent years to make enclosures accessible to all. I agree with this! On a visit last year, I noticed how accessible the zoo was, allowing those with accessibility problems to still be able to get up close to the animals.

If animals aren’t your thing, then perhaps a leisurely afternoon at the Science Museum is more your thing. It’s fully accessible for wheelchair users and offers a world class collection of worldwide scientific and technical creations.

These are just a few options, but you can find these and more in the infographic below. I think it’s important to say that one day we’ll all be old. We may be fit, healthy and active, or we may ourselves face some form of accessibility problems, so if we can all help our elderly relatives and those with accessibility issues I think the world would be a far greater place.
