AD| Why you should consider solid wood in your family home

Solid wood has a reputation for being luxurious and sophisticated, but not the most practical flooring choice available. Our flooring is going to come into contact with many elements in its life – dirt, scratches, stains and general wear and tear, especially if you come from a busy family home! With so many flooring options to choose from, picking the right type can be a hard decision. Despite solid wood perhaps being a bit of an unconventional choice for busy family households, we’ve come up with some reasons as to why you should consider it. 

Maintenance

Although we associate care-free and easy to manage with Luxury Vinyl Tiles and laminate, solid wood flooring certainly comes with its own benefits. Firstly, it will offer some sort of resistance to scratches and stains, particularly if well maintained with an oil or lacquer finish. However, we’d recommend avoiding laying it in rooms such as the bathroom, as it’s no good when it comes into contact with large amounts of water, which can cause it to warp and swell. This therefore means cleaning up any spillages and stains as quickly as possible. Solid wood flooring is relatively easy to clean, as long as it is regularly swept and specialist solid wood floor cleaner is used, as opposed to generic household cleaners such as bleach and antibacterial spray. 

Although solid wood is not scratch and stain proof like other materials, there is a way to eradicate this with solid wood. It can be sanded down and refinished a number of times depending on its thickness to remove any stains and scratches, or general wear and tear. This is ideal since pet’s claws and kid’s toys can scratch, as well as spillages causing stains are common! Therefore, even though solid wood is more susceptible to damage, the fact that you can remove it gives it an even longer life span than other materials.

Durability

Solid wood flooring is famous for its impressive durability and will last a lifetime if cared for properly. This makes it good for rooms that see high foot traffic such as the hallway and living room. Therefore, even though solid wood flooring’s price tag is higher to begin with, its life span means it’s very unlikely that you’ll have to change it in your lifetime. We know that when you’re a parent, the last thing you want is to be worrying about your flooring wearing out too quick – which is why solid wood flooring could be the answer!

Although maintenance and practicality are usually the top of our agendas when we’re looking for a new flooring, we of course need to enjoy how it looks too. Not only is solid wood flooring very durable and practical but also boasts beauty and style.
