School sports provide numerous benefits to children. Physical activity not only supports mental health and fitness, but taking part in sports at school also helps children to develop many personal skills, such as teamwork and communication.

I have collaborated with an Independent Boarding School in Herefordshire to explore the many benefits that school sports bring to children…

Wellbeing

Research shows that physical activity can help to lift our mood and relieve stress. This is because exercise helps our bodies to produce endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals, which help to relieve stress and make us feel happier. This makes sport an ideal way to support children’s mental health and wellbeing at school. Exercise can also improve alertness and concentration, which means breaking up the school day with PE helps with learning in class.

Personal Skills

During P.E. lessons at school, children have the opportunity to try a wide range of sports and exercises. These activities help children to grow in confidence by developing a number of skills. They will also develop a growth-mind set which will motivate them to practice and improve at certain sports. This positive attitude is helpful in many other aspects of your child’s education and personal life. Older children in particular, will be able to evaluate their own performances and make room for improvement.

Teamwork

Last but not least, sport is an integral part of a school environment because it promotes teamwork.
Working as a team to achieve a shared goal helps children learn how to communicate effectively and highlights the importance of partnership. Being part of a class team or school sports club allows students to develop close relationships and builds a strong support system of friends. Furthermore, teamwork helps to improve self-esteem and teaches children how to trust in other people.
