July 1, 2021

If you want to motivate your child to learn, it is important to show an interest in their education and praise them for their efforts. Having a positive attitude towards learning is so important for parents. One of the best ways you can demonstrate this is by incorporating learning into your home life. Here are a few tips from an independent school in Lincoln on how you can do this…

Talk about learning

Take time to talk together as a family about interesting topics you have learnt either at school, at work or on the news. If you have younger children you can use role play. Ask them to be the teacher and encourage them to talk about what they are learning at school or nursery. Repeating what they have learnt will help them to memorise the information.

Make learning fun

Help your child to understand that learning can happen anywhere, not just in the classroom. For example you can learn about wildlife and the weather by simply visiting a local park. To really inspire a love of learning you could arrange fun family activities to museums and art galleries on weekends or during the school holidays.

Praise their effort

Motivate your child by praising their efforts. This will also help to boost their confidence and encourage them to persevere. It is important that parents do not put too much pressure on their children to choose particular subjects or reach certain grades. This can have a negative impact on their performance and can cause stress or anxiety. Allow your child to go at their own pace and focus on effort over outcome.

Encourage organisation

Being disorganised can hinder your child’s learning and lead to feelings of stress and frustration. This is why it is import to create an organised study area for your child. If they have exams coming up you could also create a study schedule together. This will improve your child’s organisation and time management skills and motivate your child to revise.
