If you have small children then you will know that many of the rooms in tour home will, at times, take a hammering! The walls will usually end up with some sort of pen or felt-tip on them and the doors and woodwork will have chips all over the place. In addition, the carpet will tend to have had more drinks and food spilled on them than I care to mention!

With this in mind, I’ve decided that the time has come to have a complete makeover from the ceiling all the way to the floor. Here is what I have in mind when it comes to giving our lounge a makeover to breath some new life into it and make it look like a lounge and not an oversized toy room!

1. Ceilings

The ceilings have started to have quite an off white look to them. You don’t realise how yellow they have become until you give them a fresh coat of brilliant white emulsion. So my plan is to give the ceilings two coats of paint. This will also add more light into the room.

2. Walls

Our lounge currently has a mix of wallpaper and painted walls which is predominantly white. This is ok, but it gives a very cold feel to the room, especially during the winter months.

My plan is to remove the old wallpaper which has a slight textured finish and then line all the walls with a good quality thick lining paper that will give the impression of newly skimmed walls.

We also have a chimney breast with a fire surround and I intend to paint this wall in a different colour to the rest of room. I’m thinking a bright bold colour and then the rest of the walls will be in a neutral colour so it will then make our ornate fireplace become a central feature in the lounge.

3. Woodwork

The woodwork seems to get chipped on a regular basis in our home. As such I’m planning on painting the doors, door frames and skirting boards in a toughened white gloss. This will hopefully withstand children chipping the paint, but in all honesty, I’m not holding my breath!

4. Floors

The current carpet we have is patterned and very dated. It has definitely served its purpose and is desperately in need of renewing. The current carpet is very busy so I will be looking for new carpets that are a more neutral colour, without any sort of decoration as it will add a touch of class and sophistication which in turn will give our home a very modern look.

5. Accessories

I will also be looking to add some modern light fittings to both ends of the lounge and some large sized canvas prints to add character to the room.

Once this is all done our lounge will have had the makeover that has been long overdue.
