10 Benefits of Spending Time in Shade
Shade is underrated! We are all very quick to dive into the sun, especially as sunny weather is rare in the UK. This is because we are aware of the amazing benefits of the skin-craving Vitamin D! But did you know that shade also has many great benefits too?
Shades come in a range of forms, they can be portable, permanent, even a fitted to your bench or table. Whatever the shape or size, shade structures act as great protection from the sun! Next time you find yourself avoiding shade when the weather is warm, consider these 10 benefits of shade:
Less Sunburn
You can eliminate or reduce the chance of getting sunburnt with more shade. A burn occurs after too much exposure to UV rays. The skin accumulates a red patch around the affected area which becomes very painful. Staying in the shade even for a few hours, especially during 10 am to 4 pm prevents permanent and long-term damage. Your skin will have the opportunity to rejuvenate and prepare you for your next round of sun exposure!
Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer
Many of the times, skin cancer is caused by excessive sun exposure. This is when too many UV rays from the sun gets to your skin. This means skin cells are likely to be killed off! You just need a few hours in some shade every day to reduce your risk considerably.
Avoids Prickly Heat
Do you find that after some outdoor exercise, you notice a red rash with small itchy bumps on your skin? Ugh, prickly heat. This occurs when the sweat ducts are blocked with bacteria overgrowth, and occurs mainly in hot climates! You can avoid getting this by trying to stay as cool as possible during and after your exercise. Be sure to find shade and stay there for a while. It’s also a good idea to carry a sweat towel too.

Protection From Other elements
Shade will not only protect you from the sun but other external factors like dust or wind too. Like the sun, they can dry up the skin easily, this makes it easier for UV rays to penetrate the skin. As soon as you get under shade you may notice that there is less wind or dust. This is because these elements bounce off a shade, providing you with better protection!
Healthier Skin
If the rays of the sun get under your skin, UV-A rays begin to do its damage. This eventually destroys the collagen and elastin in skin. Collagen retains the firmness of skin and elastin is the support fibre to our skin. Without much of both, you can age quicker or acquire premature wrinkles. Also the sun and high humidity level can be very harmful to oily skin, so you should pay attention to climate at your home: look for a reliable humidifier with pump or AC. Hopefully, our friends from House Weather can help with that.
Glowing Hair
You might be wondering what the shade has to do with glowing hair. A lot actually! Unfortunately, the sun’s glorious rays can dry out your hair along with your skin. This can leave your hair unhealthy and weak. In the long run, you might experience loss of hair and reduction in hair colour. Getting into shade causes your body to experience a flux. This means it regains momentum for the next sunny episode. Your hair will then have ample time to regain its shine!
Prevents Dry Eyes

Your eyes are likely to get dry in the sun too. However, taking care and spending at least a couple of hours in the shade after the sun will allow your eyes to refresh. Be sure to throw on some sunglasses as well, this will reduce the direct sunlight getting to your eyes.
Not to Forget Chapped lips
Occasionally we forget our lips when we look for sun protection. However, your lips are very sensitive and can be badly affected when overexposed to the sun. They can become chapped, bleed or even peel. Along with some lip balm with SPF, shade gives them the ultimate cooling off they need!
Cool and Comfortable
Speaking of cooling, one of the incredible benefits of staying in shade is its cooling effect. Getting out of the direct sun cuts about 15 degrees off the skin temperature of a person! This is why shade will always make us feel calm and relaxed.
Mental Health
As soon as you prioritise your skin and keep it cool it will feel lighter and rejuvenated. This will make your mind feel lighter and positive! Additionally, it is important for children, the elderly and those with mental health issues to have positive mental health. So, take them into the shade too!
Shade might be underrated, but its benefits are not. In addition to spending time in the shade, always use other sun-protection methods such as applying sunscreen, wearing sun-protective clothing, and even drinking plenty of water!
