What Can You Do As A Parent To Support Your Child’s Education?
As a parent, it’s often easy to think that the education of your child falls squarely on the shoulders of the school, and the school alone. Something you might be interested to learn is that this is not the case at all. In fact, there are a lot of things that you should be doing as a parent to encourage learning, to help your children move forward with their education, and so much more. The more that you don’t do this, the more damaging it is to your child overall.

Help Them When They Need It

You can look up a list of preschool sight words so that you get an idea of where they should be. More often than not this is going to be with their homework when they are younger, but it could happen with your older children as well. In order to do this, you have to be present enough for them to know that they can come to you when they are doing their homework, perhaps making a conscious effort to be around every evening for this.
It’s entirely possible that there are going to be some subjects that are not your strong point, but that’s what Google is for. You’re not the one doing the learning, so it’s not cheating for you to look up the answers, as long as you can explain it to them so that they have an understanding of why this is the answer.
Liaise With Teachers
The best way to get information about your child’s learning is to speak to their teachers. It’s unlikely that your children are going to give you all of the information that you need, which is why parents evenings are important to attend. If you do have concerns outside of these pre-arranged meetings, then you can always call the school and ask to speak to the teacher that your child has most often.
They should be able to give you some ideas of the areas that your little one needs to work on. Or, if they are an older child, they may be able to give some advice about which subjects they struggle with, as well as point you in the right direction for some resources.
Get Them A Tutor When Needed
A lot of kids need a tutor. It’s not uncommon, and it’s not something that anyone should be ashamed of. Some people just need a little bit of extra help to get where they need to be and that is absolutely okay. If your child is one of these children, then start looking for a tutor asap. If your child has any additional needs, ensure that the tutor is prepared to deal with this, and knows what they are doing to work with these needs, rather than against them.
We know that some tutors can be quite pricey, but even just a couple of hours per week may be enough to get them to where they need to be. You can also practice with your child after the tutor is gone so that they are getting support from both sides.
Support And Encourage Them
The final thing that we’re going to say is that you should always be supporting and encouraging them, no matter how old they are. Let them know how proud you are of them, and what a good job they are doing so that they know they’re doing good. It’s hard when you’re young to feel like what you’re doing is important, but it always is.
