The end of the summer holidays

September 4, 2019

The summer holidays have really flown by this year. I feel as though I haven’t done much with our girls and as such I definitely have a case of ‘mum guilt’.

Having previously worked two days a week, past summer holidays have meant that I’ve been home with our girls three days a week during the holidays. This year has been different and it’s definitely taking some getting used to.

I started a new job back in April which means that I now work Monday to Friday. I don’t work a full day which is great as it means I can still take the girls to school and pick them up during term time, but I must admit I’ve struggled during the summer holidays.

I booked two weeks off work, but sadly during the first week the girls had tonsillitis so we didn’t end up doing anything other than staying at home, and the second week we went camping, which was fun.

On the days when I was working, when I got home I’d usually take the girls to the park or perhaps the swimming pool or library, but there have been no farm visits or trips to the beach and I feel super guilty about that.

I kept seeing photos shared online of children at the beach, at the farm and other amazing days out and it makes me feel bad. I know it can’t be helped and I have to work more days now, but it’s definitely been a learning curve.

Next year I think I’ll try to plan the summer holidays a bit differently. Instead of taking two weeks off, I might try to book three days holiday a week for three weeks which I feel will give me more of a chance to do things with the girls.

How have you managed the summer holidays?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I am sure the kids still had a great summer.
We moved house just before the summer holidays started so we have spent the summer holidays dealing with all the admin of moving house, being skint and having no days out at all! The kids have had fun though. Everything was new and exciting! Phew!
