Teaching your child to overcome obstacles
Obstacles are an inevitable part of life, no matter who you are or where you come from. Of course, these obstacles are all relative and some might be worse than others, but it’s important that we teach our children positive ways to overcome them. Unfortunately, lots of children find certain problems and challenges too overwhelming, causing them to feel stressed and unhappy, while others simply believe they will be dealt with by someone else. Neither of these outcomes are particularly healthy, which is why parents should explore other options with their youngsters. Read on for some tips from a private school in London.

Encourage Perseverance
Try to reinforce that giving up in the face of adversity is never the answer. If there is a problem that they are capable of solving on their own, don’t take over and solve it for them, because this will suggest that giving up and handing the problem to someone else is the right answer. In actual fact, perseverance and continuing to try will usually lead to a positive outcome and a stronger sense of accomplishment.
Embrace Failure
There will be times when your child makes mistakes and things don’t go to plan. Don’t be hard on them when this happens because this will make them nervous to try again in the future. Instead, praise them for trying and remind them that even grownups make mistakes, the trick is to learn from them.
Provide Opportunities to Practise
Where possible, try and introduce various obstacles to your child that they can overcome. Give them new responsibilities, like planning your next family outing or holiday. Ask them to help you with the household chores. As they start to experience new things and become more familiar with solving various problems, they will become more confident with it.
Show Them How It’s Done
Children learn much of their behaviour by observing their parents and other important people in their life. With that said, show your child how to successfully overcome an obstacle. You might feel like losing your temper, but instead you should try and remain calm and optimistic.
