Review: Kookie Magazine

How many times have you wandered into a shop with your children, only for them to ask – actually, beg is probably the best word – for a magazine?

Now I don’t begrudge my children a magazine. However, what I can’t stand is all the plastic tat that comes with most magazines. They’ll be played with for all of five minutes before they’re discarded and eventually binned.

It’s a common occurrence for most parents I imagine, but what can you do? Aside from boycott these magazines, there is another option available.

Kookie is an award winning girl-powered print magazine for ages 7 to 12+.

In a world that often says there’s only one way to be a girl (think pink), Kookie provides a genuine alternative – one that offers girls a rounded and optimistic sense of who they are and what they could become. There are interviews with remarkable women and girls from around the world, profiles of pioneering women in history, original fiction and comics, plus lively features on everything from adventure and activism to science and sleepovers, as well as craft, debate, pets, puzzles, problems, posters and more. Kookie is surprising, informative, inclusive and most of all … fun!

When I first gave my girls a Kookie magazine each they were intrigued. Inside the 56 page magazine, which by the way is 100% ad-free, one of my girls found an article in the debate section titled ‘Should kids have homework’ really interesting. Two sides of the argument were presented by two girls and after reading it, my daughter decided that she thinks homework is a good idea and she went onto list her reasons why.

My other daughter found the ‘Give it a go!’ section really informative. The article in particular featured a girl called Nell who is on the GB Junior Women’s Football Team.

In the other magazine the ‘Give it a go!’ section had information, pictures and tips about yoga.

I really like that there are stories in Kookie too, but my personal favourite are the comics. It takes me back to my own childhood when I would spend hours reading comics!

At the back of the magazine there are puzzles and problems for the girls to solve too.

I woke up one morning to the sound of giggling and found one of our girls sat at the table reading Kookie.

She was giggling at the ‘My most embarrassing moments’ section.

I really do think Kookie is a fantastic magazine for young girls. It’s full of inspiring interviews, fabulous fiction and comics, topical debate and creative challenges, as well as fun and informative features, pets, puzzles, problems, posters and more!

Kookie is a quarterly magazine that comes out in March, June, September and December. Each issue is available to buy online here for £6.50 each or you can opt for a 12 month subscription (4 issues) for just £24.

Kookie was named Consumer Publication of the Year (Small Publisher) at the 2019 Mumbrella Publish Awards and Launch of the Year at the 2018 British Society of Magazine Editors Awards.
