Home security is important for many people.
When we leave home whether it be for a day at work or to go on holiday, we all ensure our homes are locked up securely. We check that the oven’s off, the windows are closed, nothing of value is left out on display and if you’re anything like me, you’ll check and then check again that the front door is definitely locked.
For many people protecting their home and belongings is as simple as locking the front door. However, for other people having that extra bit of security is important.
The Netgear Arlo Single HD Security Camera is 100% wire-free, and can be used indoors or outdoors. I was recently sent one from Maplin to review, and I’m very impressed with how easy it was to set up, but also by how clear the picture is.
Available online for £199.99, this HD security camera is perfect for those wanting an extra bit of security. Inside the box you’ll find:
- Base Unit
- Camera Unit
- Wall mount
- Quick start guide
- Ethernet cable
- Mains adapter
- Window sticker
The quick start guide is easy to follow which makes setting up the camera very quick and simple. In less than five minutes it was ready for use.
The first thing you’ll need to do is download the Arlo app and create an account. This takes approximately two to three minutes.
Then just pop the batteries into the camera unit, connect the base unit to your modem using the ethernet cable included and follow the step-by-step instructions on the app.
You then need to press the on/off button on the back of the base unit. An orange light will appear. After two minutes this will change to display two green lights which means the unit is ready to be synced to the camera.
To sync the base unit to the camera, you simply hold down the sync button on the base unit for two seconds, and then hold down the sync button on the camera unit for two seconds.
Once you’re all set up, you can control the camera using the app.
You can arm and disarm the camera via the app, but you can also schedule when you want to arm the camera so it saves you from having to go in at a specific time or day to manually arm the camera.
You can also invite other people via the app to view the footage and control the camera too. This is particularly handy if there’s more than one of you living at the same address.
As you can see from the picture below you can view live footage of your home via the app, giving you peace of mind wherever you are that your home is safe. You can also record and take photos via the app at the click of a button.
The app also allows you to set up push notifications. Once the camera is armed, if any motion is detected you’ll be alerted straight away.
There’s also a ‘library’ section on the app which allows you to view any photos or video footage. I was really surprised by how good the picture quality is. So much so that I recorded myself on the camera so that I could share it with you. See the video below.
As you can see it really is excellent quality!
The night vision is also very clear.
Here are some of the main features of the Netgear Arlo HD Security Camera:
• The cameras are completely wire free running for up to six months on batteries
• Motion Alerts – Receive push notifications and emails if anything moves
• Night Vision – See what’s happening even in the dark

Overall, we’re very impressed with how quick and easy this camera was to set up, but also by clear the picture is. The app is a great way to control the camera and view your photos and video, plus view your home live. The app is straight forward and easy to use as well.
