The Benefits of Drama Lessons for Children
In most UK schools, drama lessons are compulsory for students until they reach GCSE level. Lots of children also have extra drama classes outside of school hours. This is great, because drama lessons provide many benefits to children and allow them to develop a range of key skills that they can transfer across other areas of their education. I have teamed up with a stage school in North London to share some more information on the value of drama lessons for kids.
Drama Lessons Provide a Confidence Boost
In drama, students are required to perform in front of others, even if its just their teacher and peers. While this might seem daunting at first, eventually they will become more comfortable public speaking, which is great for their confidence. As a result, they may feel more comfortable raising their hand in other lessons to engage in classroom discussions. They might also feel more optimistic about pursuing hobbies and taking risks.
Drama Classes Improve Communication Skills
Public speaking and reading from a script not only help youngsters with their confidence, but its also an opportunity for them to become better communicators. They will learn to speak coherently and will most probably also develop their vocabulary.
Drama Productions Promote Teamwork
When performing on stage, students must work together in order for the production to succeed. This teaches children the importance of teamwork and working with their peers to achieve a common goal. What’s more, they’ll also have to listen to the opinions and ideas of others during rehearsals. Teamwork and respecting one’s peers is an important lesson for children and will benefit them in their future career.
So, you may have previously considered drama lessons to be less important than other school subjects, but they are actually very advantageous for young people. As well as the benefits discussed above, drama productions also provide students with an opportunity to explore various hobbies, such as music, costume and set design and lighting.
