Helping Your Child Develop Team Working Skills

Working well in teams is paramount to all of us. We will have many opportunities to work together in groups, which is why it’s going to be valuable to have your child learn the vital skills involved in teamwork. Here are some ways to help your child build on their skills.

Present a number of different options to your child

Keep your child on their toes. They’re going to appreciate that a lot more when they’re older, and it’s worth the investment at an early age so that they can pick up more skills. This is their chance to try out different things that rely on working in a team, which will give them the first steps towards gaining confidence. Mixing things up on a regular basis helps them with resilience, key to being a great member of any team.

Explore lots of team-based activities

From the extracurricular activities your child will pick up in a prep school, or attending playgroups and sessions together with them and other parents, there’s a lot to discover in finding the time to work in teams. Your child can learn a lot from leaning on others easily, and will give your child a lot more confidence if they’re put in these situations from an early age. Team based activities could include painting with a group of other toddlers, making a story together in a group, or something more physical like sports.

Know the importance of communication and decision making

These two skills alone will help your child work better with others in general. Communication is important for a number of reasons, like being able to understand what they’re being asked to do, and how it will change outcomes. Decision making is also really important, as they have to make a clear path of what they need to do in order to succeed as a team. If they can master these skills early on then they’ll be much more reliable in a team setting.
