EmJ Crochet Launches on Instagram!

Ok, so that title may be a little over the top, but if you don’t blow your own trumpet who else will?!

Around two months ago I decided to learn how to crochet. You can read more about that here. I started learning by watching You Tube tutorials by Bella Coco. You can find her You Tube here. There’s also a Facebook group which is great for advice and sharing your makes.

After learning the basics, the first thing I made was a granny square blanket each for my twin girls. I then played around with some embellishments such as butterflies and flowers before moving onto coasters.

I was then approached by LoveCrafts for a collaboration which saw me make a Bobble Stripe Blanket. The pattern is from Bella Coco.

I’ve since discovered Crochet Now magazine and Crochet Society. The first Crochet Now magazine I bought published part 1 of a ‘crochet along’ (also known as ‘CAL’). Each month, the magazine publishes one part of a blanket and by the end of it, you’ve made a beautiful mosaic crochet blanket. Wasn’t sure if I’d be capable of making it, but I thought I’d give it a go and I’m pleased that with some help, I’ve managed to make all three published parts and I can’t wait to see the end result!

I’ve also signed up to the Crochet Society monthly subscription boxes and I received my first box last week. It’s a monthly box full of crochet goodies, yarn and some exclusive patterns. The great thing about the boxes is that Sarah of Bella Coco also does a video tutorial which means the boxes are great for beginners.

Now I tend to get a lot of ideas from Pinterest and Instagram. However, seeing as I’m useless at Pinterest, I decided to set up a little Instagram page for my crochet. If you fancy nose, or if you’d like to follow my crochet account, you can find me @EmJCrochet.

So now that it’s been established that I’m a bit of a crochet addict, I thought I’d share some of my most recent makes with you. Now, I hadn’t heard of amigurumi before I started crocheting so I’m guessing you may not have either. Amigurumi is basically a crocheted or knitted stuffed toy. It’s the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures.

After searching the #amigurumi hashtag on Instagram I fell in love and decided to invest in this Crochet Cute Critters book that was recommended to me for beginners.

Someone also suggested that a good start for learning amigurumi would be to make a heart as this will teach me about increasing and decreasing (the size) so that’s exactly what I did! Of course, my twin girls claimed the two hearts I made for themselves and decided to spray them with a bit of my perfume so they smell gorgeous! Again, I followed a Bella Coco tutorial to make this heart.

When my mother in law found out that I was learning to crochet she asked if I could make her a blanket so this was my next make. It’s my own design so I’ve named it after my mother in law and called it ‘The Mary Blanket’. It’s not perfect, but I love it so much, especially the wavy border, which again is from a Bella Coco tutorial.

I’ve also made a wash cloth for one of my girls.

I have so many things that I want to make! My wish list just keeps growing. I have my first Crochet Society box makes to keep me busy and I also have my eye on this gorgeous Spring Dreams blanket by Sew Hooky.
