Brilliant Mum Feature

This week our brilliant mum feature is Alice who blogs at Alice Jane Potter.

Alice is 23 years old and lives in the seaside town of Blackpool. She’s an independent Fashion Designer and graduated with a first class degree last summer. Alice also works for Lush Cosmetics, but is currently on maternity leave until 2019. She’s been with her boyfriend since they were 14 and now they happily live together with their new baby girl, Evangeline, who was born on the 9th of June 2018! Along with this, Alice is a blogger and says whilst she’s off bonding with her bundle of joy, she’s venturing into hopefully starting up her own business/brand which will mean that she can work from home as she raises her little girl.

Thanks for taking part Alice!

Have you always wanted to be a mum?

I always wanted to be a Mum and unfortunately have experienced both my Mum and Sister struggle and suffer with miscarriages throughout my life. I was always really scared that I wouldn’t be able to have a baby. In January 2017 I was diagnosed with Cervical Ectropion which is an overload of excess cells in your cervix. I was told that I would struggle to conceive a baby without having surgery. Two weeks before my surgery I found out that I was pregnant with a miracle baby I had never expected. I felt extremely blessed and since becoming a Mum I have been filled with so much pride and happiness.

How did you feel when your children were born?

My entire pregnancy was very difficult due to problems with my cervix, I was constantly in and out of hospital and in a lot of pain throughout. The birth was a lot more traumatic than I had expected too and after 35 hours in labour with mutiple scary moments I was rushed to theatre as my baby had to be instrumentally delivered.

As soon as I saw my baby every single fear disappeared. It was worth every single day, minute, second just to have her in my life. I felt instant love for this tiny little being and couldn’t quite believe that I had managed to create something so beautiful!

What have been your most rewarding experiences so far as a mum?

It’s the smallest things from seeing her recognise my voice and her face lighting up to snuggles on the sofa with my tiny human. The other day she smiled for the first time which was caught on video and my heart felt like it was going to burst! Those moments are so precious so to have captured that and have it forever is such a lovely thing.

What are some of your funniest moments to have happened to you as a mum?

The funniest moments have definitely been sick and poo explosions. I never expected to have found humour in that but you know it’s true love when you’re covered in poo or sick and still think your child is the most beautiful being ever created.

Have there been any situations with your children that you have found difficult to cope with?

We had to spend the first four days of Evangeline’s life in hospital due to her being Jaundice and on antibiotics. In this time she had to wear a mask over her eyes and we were told that we couldn’t hold her unless she was being fed or needed to be settled. It was a really difficult time as she was in a lot of distress and I felt so hopeless as I was recovering from the birth myself. We were so lucky that she recovered so well which meant we could finally go home to start our new life as a family!

What are your dreams and hopes for your children?

I am very blessed to have been raised and surrounded by strong women throughout my life and that’s something that’s very important when raising my daughter. I want her to be surrounded with constant love and support and to have the belief in herself that she is capable of anything she puts her mind to.
