Brilliant Mum Feature Week 45
Hello and welcome to the Brilliant Mum Feature. Once a week I will be featuring one mum in a bid to find out more about them and their lives.
If you’d like to take part in this series, simply fill in this form.

This week our brilliant mum feature is Star who blogs at Autism Kids on Tour.
Star is 36 years old and lives in the North of England. She works eleven hours a day as a childminder so she can be around for her own children. Star is also a single mum of two. Her children are 13 and 11. Star’s 11 year old is Autistic and has Sensory Processing Disorder and her 13 year old is going through the diagnosis process for Autism and PDA. Star says she doesn’t get much spare time, but when she does she likes to play paintball!
Thanks for taking part Star!

Have you always wanted to be a mum?
Yes. Ever since I was young I wanted children. I have worked with children all my life. I had it all planned out when I was a teenager – I was going to have two kids, a girl and then a boy and I would have them close together and have the first one when I was 23! I ended up having my daughter when I was 22 and eighteen months later having my son when I was 24 so I almost lived out my plan!
How did you feel when your children were born?
My daughter was born in a hospital and I hated it! I was given pethadine just before she was born and it made me sick. They left her cold with just a nappy on and I was too ill to dress her. She ended up needing to go in a special heated bed. Noone would help me breastfeed and I had to fight to go home. When I had my son I had a home birth which was so much nicer! When my kids were born it was like I got super powers! I was more confident in myself and had so much love for my children.
What have been your most rewarding experiences so far as a mum?
Seeing my children develop in their own way.
What are some of your funniest moments to have happened to you as a mum?
My son has a very literal understanding of language and also says what he thinks so I have been in many situations where he has told strangers how fat they are or asked very awkward questions!
Have there been any situations with your children that you have found difficult to cope with?
With my children having special needs I have been in a lot of situations I have found difficult to cope with! Ive had to deal with fighting for help for my son at every stage of his education. Ive faced hundreds of appointments, meetings, calls from school. Ive been to mediation and tribunal. My son has been suicidal and seeing a psychologist. My kids can be really hard work and sometimes just cant cope. Ive had to learn not to care what other people might think. Ive learnt to ignore disaproving stares and comments and learnt I can deal with and overcome anything whilst tackling life a day at a time!
What are your dreams and hopes for your children?
I hope and dream that they can grow up to live as independantly as possible. I try to make as many happy memories for them as I can.
