And The Mother of The Year Award Goes to…

As I sit writing this, I feel like a bad mum.

I know for the most part that I am a good mum, but every now and again something will happen that will make me feel like the worst mum in the world.

Take one day last week for example. The sun was shining. It was a beautiful day so I decided to walk to school to pick the girls up.

As soon as their teacher released them back into my care, that’s when it started. Stood just meters away from their teacher, the girls start whacking one another with their book bags and moaning at each other for no apparent reason.

Through gritted teeth and an obviously fake smile I asked my children in my best ‘I’m a good mum public speaking voice’ to quit acting like hooligans.

They did and we continued on our way. I treated them to a slush puppy from the shop and we walked home chatting about our days.

We arrived home. The girls changed out of their uniforms and whilst I put dinner on, the arguing started again.

Again I have no idea what they were arguing about. I’m assuming it’s something menial and wonder to myself if my twin and I were also like this when we were kids. If so, boy do I feel sorry my parents now I know what they had to put up with! Anyway, I went and told them to stop arguing, but as soon as my back was turned, they started again.

I sent them to their bedroom and told them not to emerge until dinner was ready!

In all fairness when they did emerge for dinner, they said sorry. After they’d stuffed their faces, I took them to their Beavers cluband that was the end of it.

The next morning however, the arguments and backchat started again. One wanted to wear trousers that were clearly too short. One wanted her hair up but wanted to do it herself and it was a mess! They wouldn’t brush their teeth. They gave my attitude like a teenager and I had had enough!

It was time to leave for school or we’d be late. I raised my voice. This is something I don’t do very often so I kind of hope when I do they know it means business!

I said things I wish I hadn’t said such as: “Perhaps you’d like a new mummy? One that you actually like?”

I know they’re only seven, but sometimes I feel that they need to understand that mummy and daddy have feelings too, and that the way they talk to us and treat us sometimes upsets us. That mummy and daddy get tired too, after all whilst they’re in school we’re in work not at home watching day time TV.

When they finally started to behave and we managed to get to school, albeit not looking their best, they then went in with right moods! Who can blame them? However, I also went to work in a right mood and was left feeling like the worst mum in the world.

I apologised for shouting before they went into school and tried to explain why I had shouted, but the damage had already been done. Suffice to say I didn’t get a hug or a kiss goodbye as they wandered into school with scowls on their faces.

I know that by the time I pick them up, they’ll have forgotten, but I won’t have, and I know it’s normal to feel this way, but sometimes, just sometimes, I wish they could see things from my point of view!
