London can be a daunting place to visit with a family are there is just so much to take in. Rather than spin your wheels trying to go everywhere and do everything, however, sometimes the more enjoyable and rewarding days out can be those where we focus on just a couple of destinations that we know are going to be great and take our time. Below, we’ve focused on a selection of potential family days out that fit this bill quite nicely.
London River Cruise – Every tourist city on earth has your typical hop-on and hop-off bus tour service, but London offers something that many of those cities lack – one of the world’s most famous rivers. Seeing the city by boat from the Thames is a real treat for kids of all ages and can represent a really profound family bonding experience. Many London river cruises also offer the option of going further along the river to Greenwich, which is a great place to visit that also contains the now iconic O2 arena, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.
Buckingham Palace – The seat of Her Majesty the Queen, Buckingham Palace is often ranked as the number one thing to see in London. For generations, this beacon of nobility has represented a part of Britain that should mean so much more now in a time of great division. It’s a symbol of our history and our heritage and it’s also open for tours. We would recommend booking your Buckingham Palace tickets online prior to your visit though, as there are only a certain number of tours allowed per day and they tend to fill up fast.
Shrek’s Adventure London – From actual royalty to fictional royalty – the king of the ogres has taken up residence in London recently with a magical interactive walking adventure that includes a flying 4D bus journey, the chance to watch a baby dragon being born and, of course, interactions with the ogre himself. If your family grew up with the Shrek films then this is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
Science Museum – We understand that your kids might see the word “museum” and baulk, but trust us – they’ll love this one. With a range of simulators and hands-on activities that are sure to delight and entertain even the most stubborn learner, the Science Museum is engineered to feel as much like a museum full of games as it is a museum of learning. You’ll be amazed at the 3D IMAXcinema and dazzled by the constantly evolving exhibits, which will teach you and your family about everything from space travel to biology in a way that is so fun it doesn’t even feel like learning!
