The last year has been a difficult one for most, and our children have felt the impact as much as anyone else. They will undoubtedly be feeling the strain from missing school and being separated from loved ones, and this could lead to problems such as stress, insomnia and anxiety. Mindfulness can be a tricky concept for children to grasp, so it is important to introduce methods gradually so that they are able to reap the maximum benefits. Start off by discussing your senses, ask your child to look around and name 5 things they can see, listen and list 3 things they can hear, breathe deeply through their nose and name something they can smell, and lastly close their eyes and describe something they can feel. This will bring them to the present moment and allow them to practice tuning into their senses. Try doing this daily to encourage them to get into the habit and to increase a feeling of calm throughout each day.

Another method is to practice breathing exercises and guided meditation, though it is important to take this at a pace that suits them. Perhaps start off with a one minute meditation so they don’t get bored or distracted. Have them close their eyes and rest their hand on their stomach, instructing them to breathe in and out deeply, feeling the rise and fall of their stomach as they do. It may be helpful if you count their breaths out loud so that they can use your voice as a guide. This is an excellent stress reliever and a great exercise to try before bedtime to encourage ultimate relaxation and a good night’s sleep.
