For busy parents like you, keeping your home organized with every single thing in its proper place may seem a dream. There’s never enough time to do anything else with your hands full. The kids may not be solely responsible for the chaos, but they do shake things up and wreak havoc in the house.

While you can’t restore your house to the condition it had when you first moved in, you can do something about the way things are in the household. Stay on top of things, and get your skills working with these realistic tips for organizing your home and your family too.

Tip No. 1: Involve Your Family

Your spouse and your children also live in the house and can help you out with the household chores. It’s a good move to teach kids about responsibility and taking ownership of their actions at home.

The children can start with their bedrooms or playroom, tidying up their toys, and replacing these in their respective bins. You can share the tasks of cooking, washing the dishes, and decluttering the refrigerator with your partner.

Tip No. 2: Break Down the Tasks

How or where do you begin cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, and some of the dirtiest areas in the house? To make the prospect more appealing and less overwhelming, try to create subtasks or checklists for every area.

Work out a manageable schedule for these tasks that can be on a daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis. For example, wash the dishes and wipe the kitchen counter as you go, and deep-clean your dishwasher once a month.

Tip No. 3:  Meal Plan or Batch Cook

Meal planning and batch cooking may help you save time and effort in preparing meals or ingredients and dealing with the mess afterward. When you plan meals, you cook a week’s worth of food for the family (lunches, snacks, and dinners) all at once and store them in the fridge.

Batch cooking is more of preparing components that go to recipes that you’ll cook for the week, per Hey Nutrition Lady. You can cut vegetables and meat or cook rice in advance and portion them out for any meals of the week.

Tip No. 4: Create a Workable Laundry System

If organizing laundry is one of the many things piling up on your to-do list, you will need a system to tackle this task head-on efficiently. Assign a basket or hamper to every room, and discourage leaving dirty clothes on the floor.

Consider doing the laundry daily or weekly with exceptions. Fold the clothes at once, and sort them in one place with the kids putting theirs away in their closets and drawers. To make the chore less tedious, check out techniques for folding shirts and pants swiftly and saving space at the same time.

Tip No. 5: Shop Wisely

Thinking hard about your future purchases is one way to prevent clutter from invading your home. If you were to buy a jacket, a toy, a gadget, or a piece of furniture, visualize where to put it and what happens when it falls into disuse or disfavor.

It also helps to imagine early on the task of washing and keeping the items clean. Surely, such things will take up space and storage, which becomes a critical issue as your family grows.

Tip No. 6: Monetize Your Old or Unwanted Stuff

As old clothes make way for new ones and preferences in fashion change, you wonder what to do with a potentially huge pile of items. Don’t discard or throw anything just yet because you can donate some to charity and turn others into cash.

You can put up an e-commerce site to sell your clothes and come up with a secure and smooth checkout process for faster transactions. The money can go to household essentials or buying inventory for your online store.

Tip No. 7: Set Realistic Expectations

Running a household is a challenge, but it becomes less burdensome when you set your expectations accordingly. You can adopt any of the abovementioned tips, like trying a weekly laundry schedule and meal planning and keep an open mind on the outcome. List down the wins and downsides of each plan, and find better alternatives or fine-tune. This way, you won’t get burned out chasing perfection when it comes to organizing your home.
