I enjoy working out. It’s my time to focus on me and do something that I enjoy. My main sport is running.
Having run the London Marathon earlier this year in addition to two half marathons and lots of 10k and 5ks, I think it’s fair to say that I know quite a bit about running.

Training for the London Marathon was my biggest challenge and that’s mainly because it’s so time consuming!
Finding the time to squeeze in a run or workout in between working and taking care of the kids was so hard, but it wasn’t impossible.
With some careful planning and lots of early mornings, it is actually possible to workout when you lead a busy life.
Having a degree of flexibility is important. Most of my long runs happened early in the morning before anyone else was awake.
I’d set my alarm for 4am, make sure I had everything prepped the night before and then I could just get up and go.
The night before I’d lay my kit out, charge my GPS watch and headphones, fill up my water bottle, and undo my shoelaces as it would take me a good ten minutes to battle with undoing them first thing in the morning!
Preparation is key, as is good time management!
When I got home from my run I’d usually find my children were just about ready to wake up. This way I felt that I hadn’t missed out on spending time with them. It meant by the time I came home I was awake, refreshed and full of energy to face the day!
Of course training for a marathon isn’t all about running. As strange as that sounds it’s true! I learned this the hard way when training for my first half marathon. I went out all guns blazing and tore my adductor muscle. It was painful and took far too long to heal as I kept trying to run on it without letting it heal properly. Something plenty of runners are guilty of doing!
Running requires good overall strength. That’s why I started to incorporate strength training into my plan. Of course in addition to running, this meant I needed to magically find some more hours in the day!
That’s when I discovered the joy of a home workout! I found that I could squeeze in a good half hour to an hour of strength training when I got home from work before picking the kids up from school. Of course I could also squeeze in a home workout when the kids are in bed! Wido recently published an article called 6 Reasons To Ditch The Gym & Exercise From Home which is a great read for those interested in doing the same. They also stock an impressive range of outdoor activity supplies including outdoor fitness and sports equipment.
Plenty of people make excuses for why they don’t exercise with a lack of time being the main reason, but with some careful planning, time management skills and preparation it is possible!

Hi Ava, I used to go for an early morning or late evening run, but I know running isn’t for everyone. Do you have a local gym? I found spin class really good and it’s also a great opportunity to meet new people. Video wise, search for Pop Sugar Fitness on You Tube. They have lots of videos you can do from home. Hope this helps.
