It’s almost summertime, which means you are probably planning some sort of trip for your family. This is an exciting time, but if you know what’s good for you then there is probably a looming feeling of anxiety as well. When it comes to traveling with children, even the smallest of inconveniences can get out of hand very quickly.
Having made our own fair share of trips with our kids, we have accumulated some of our favourite traveling tips for family outings. Some of these may vary depending on where it is you are traveling to as well as your way of getting there. The gear you bring on a road trip can vary greatly, from items you bring for a plane flight to toys to keep kids busy during a long car ride.
Here are our top 6 travel essentials for your summer travels you don’t want to leave behind:
1. Bring Water Bottles
Regardless of where you are traveling to, hydration will always be important, and your kids will always get thirsty. Reusable water bottles are great; however, they can be tricky to reliably refill when you are in an unfamiliar area.
We recommend travelling with a pack of little water bottles to quench your family’s thirst.
2. Protect Your Electronics
No one needs to tell you that electronic devices such as the gaming systems, a Kindle or iPhone, are expensive. We use these in and out of each day, and especially when travelling. You will most likely have your iPhone out for the majority of your trip, and in order to navigate to your hotel or take memorable photos, you’re going to need to make sure it’s protected. This is especially true if you just got a phone upgrade.
It’s important to protect your iPhone 8 with a reliable phone case if you haven’t yet.
3. Pack Trip-Friendly Snacks
This may seem like an obvious step, but there is strategy involved in packing trip-friendly snacks. Try finding snacks that don’t spill so easily during transportation and when your child is trying to eat them.
If you are taking a long road trip, avoid snacks that crumble easily that could annoyingly slip and fall into a hidden car crevice.
4. Don’t Forget Headphones
With all of your bags packed with phones, iPads, gaming systems, and music players, the only surefire way to maintain your sanity is by bringing along headphones for everyone. With your kids playing games for hours on end in the back seat, handing them a pair of headphones to contain the endless gaming noise can be a real lifesaver.
Consider headphone gear designed especially for children so that the volume is limited to protect their little ears.
5. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Each and every member of your family should bring good quality, comfortable shoes for your traveling. Look for solid arch support and reliable foot protection for whatever your adventure may bring you. There are plenty of brands out there to browse from that offer different colours and sizes that fit both children and adults. You can even find stylish options that will go with your summer wardrobe that also give great tread. You’ll be able to withstand your wooded hiking venture or long walks through a foreign city.
Are you going somewhere near the ocean? Waterproof shoes are a lifesaver.
6. Plan Activities for the Kids
Whether you can believe it or not, your children will get bored at some point after playing with their electronics for too long, so it is good to have something else for them to do on hand. A few of our favourite things to bring along on family trips include:
- A book of MadLibs
- Colouring books and markers
- Blank notebooks to draw in
- Their favourite children’s books, especially “I Spy”
