5 steps to baby bedtime routine
This is a collaborative post.
Your baby’s sleep routine can seem like a daunting, and somewhat tricky, step in parenthood. Like adults, babies have their own internal clock, comfort cues and sleep preferences. Adapting to these preferences will help you and your baby sleep better in the long run.
A sleep routine doesn’t have to be set in stone either. Skip some of the below steps, switch them around or make up your own. Just remember, good sleep cues are easy to use and easy to wean. A bedtime routine can regulate your baby’s mood and even, improve their language and cognitive skills. Sleep is essential for anyone, but especially for babies!

Here are a few ideas on how to get your baby to fall in love with sleepy time.
Set a schedule
A sustainable sleep routine needs to fit you and your baby. Consider your baby’s internal clock and your schedule when choosing a wake-up time. Be flexible and adapt to your baby’s feeding periods as well. As a general rule, most parents start a sleep routine around the two-month mark. However, your child’s sleep schedule will depend on their age.
Bedtime bathing
Fill a bath with lukewarm water and enjoy playing with your baby in the tub. You can use toys and games to make it more entertaining for your baby. Ensure these games are quiet and relaxing for your child, so they don’t get too excited before bed. Once they begin to tire, soothe them with a post-bath moisturise, massage and cuddle. Massaging your baby can help you bond, and it also boosts their immunity. Win, win!
Full tummy
Once your baby is clean and sleepy, sit down for a night-time cuddle and feed. Babies sleep much better with a full tummy, and it gives you a chance to squeeze in some extra cuddles. But make sure to get all the burps out before laying them down. Better safe than sorry!
However, try not to let your baby become dependent on food to get to sleep. Use their night-time bottle as a final activity before the nappy change and bedtime.
Create a sleeping environment
Many adults enjoy lighting candles, getting snuggled in a blanket and reading a book before bed. For babies, it’s all about relaxing music, dim lighting and soft clothing. You can regulate your baby’s temperature and create a familiar sleeping environment with baby sleeping bags. These often have fitted necks to stop your baby slipping down in the night, no matter how much they fidget. They are a great way to ensure safety and comfort, with room to grow.
Bonding time
Reading and singing to your baby will strengthen your connection while helping them fall asleep. They like to be near you before bed — besides, even adults like a cuddle before bedtime.
