The Meeting Room aka The Toilet!

May 10, 2016

A few days ago I wandered into our bathroom to do my business, as you do, and before I’d even had a chance to sit down I was joined by not one, but both of my daughters!

I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t get it. I mean when I’m in our living room with them, they can happily sit and play with one another without so much as a glance towards me to check if I’m still in the room, but for whatever reason, whenever I enter the toilet, it’s almost as though the girls and I have a magnetic field that gets switched on which draws them into the same room as me, although this is only switched on when I’m in the bathroom, more specifically when I’m on the toilet!

Anyway, this led to a rather odd conversation with our four year old girls whilst in the bathroom one day. I was sat on the toilet and I said to the girls that the bathroom is like our meeting room. It’s where we tend to congregate when the girls wants to just stand in silence and stare at me (odd, I know! I mean of all the opportunities they have throughout the day where they could do this, the ‘meeting room’ appears to be the room of choice!), but also where they like to climb onto my lap for a cuddle or stand right next to me, as close as they can, for a chat!

Please tell me, I’m not alone in this! I mean I don’t mind that they see me on the toilet, but if I can’t escape to the bathroom for five minutes peace then where can I escape to?! We have two bathrooms, so it’s not even as if they need to kick me off when they need to go, as they could just go to the other bathroom!

I remember the days, actually, I sometimes look back on the days fondly, where I could go to the bathroom in peace! Well, maybe it wasn’t exactly ‘peace’ as I could still hear them talking, or more likely arguing with one another, but the fact that I could be on my own there for a few minutes was heavenly!

Hmmm, reading that last sentence back to myself out loud and it seems a bit silly now, but it’s the truth! The reality of being a parent! That some days, in fact most days, every mum and dad, just needs five minutes peace to sneak into the bathroom by themselves, even if they don’t actually need to use the toilet!

Am I alone on this or can you relate?

This is quite funny to read. I kind of know what you mean. My friend has 3 kids and whenever i go and see her and i use the bathroom in her flat, i always get the kids shouting after me. They do the same when she needs the bathroom too x
