Taking toys to work!

August 22, 2016
Children are funny beings at times. I wish I could remember certain details about my own childhood, mainly how I felt about various different things such as my parents going to work and other similar events.

The reason I’ve been thinking about this lately is because for quite some time now our twin girls, who are four years old, have started to give me toys to bring to work with me. Of course I don’t actually bring the toys into work with me.

Sometimes I’ll leave them in my car or in my handbag, but when I return home with their toys the girls are delighted and often ask me what their toys had for lunch!

It sounds pretty sweet, but it got me thinking about why they’ve started doing this. It triggered a memory for me from when the girls were younger. Every time their daddy left for work, R would always say, “Daddy, when you come home from work, will you play football with me?”.

She’d ask this question every day without fail. At the time I thought it was her way of gaining some reassurance that daddy would be coming home. It’s quite logical really. By hearing daddy answering her question with, ‘yes’ she knew that he had to come home because he said he’d play football with her upon on his return.

I wonder if the girls are giving me the toys to take to work with me as some form of reassurance that I’ll have to return because I have their toys.

I wish I knew! Of course, I could be looking into this far too much and over thinking it! They might just want their toys to have a nice day out with mummy!

Does your child do anything like this?

Aww, I think it's sweet. Maybe they just want a part of them to be with you all day. My eldest is still too young to do something like this.

Perhaps they aren't too sure what you do for work and think you disappear on your own for several hours a day. Giving you their toys is a way of them giving you companionship perhaps? A way for them to make you feel less lonely.

I can't believe you leave them in your car or handbag 😉 Seems logical to me though – just a reassurance that you'll be coming back #binkylinky

I'm inclined to agree with Helen. I think they are giving you the toys to keep you company while you're away. I'm sure they find their toy's company comforting and they probably want to share that comfort with you. #binkylinky

Interesting theory. It may be nothing more than an expression of love for their mummy? I'm going to ponder over this one. The possibilities are endless. Thanks for hosting #BinkyLinky

Aww that is so cute, Alfie often leaves his teddy in the car and asks us to look after him 🙂 Love the things kids come out with. Thanks for hosting! #binkylinky

I find this incredibly adorable and thought provoking at the same time. I'm usually a real deep thinker and can overthink things very often. This has made me think about a child's thought process and I think you could be right. For example , kids don't really understand time, mainly the length of it, if I say to Corben we will do something tomorrow, he's no idea how long tomorrow is away. If I tell him we will do it after sleep time and when we wake up, he has an idea of when things will happen. So your theory on them making sure you will be coming home is similar in the fact that they know if they give you something you have to return it so will be coming back. That either makes perfect sense or I really am going crazy, either way great post, I've got headache now!

My eldest who is 2 always says "see you in a minute" – I think that way it reassures him that I won't be gone forever.. When I go to uni he says "you going to do your work at uni?" when I say yeah he settles down with daddy while I go out to study, he knows when I say I am going to uni that I will be gone a while but not forever 🙂 Great post 🙂 #binkylinky

Its started slowing down some now, but for months my daughter was obsessed with caring for a group of "babies" that she had. They needed to go everywhere with us and she always needed assurances that they would be taken care of when she wasn't around. I'm still not sure what it's all about, but I think she just likes caring for something like she was cared for. Its very sweet #binkylinky

It's so hard to get into our kids' minds sometimes, but when we finally get them, we see things differently. I can understand your opinion. My son is just asking if I’m coming to take him from kindergarten  #BinkyLinky
