On Monday, my sister and I went to see the Spice Girls in concert at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
My sister and I grew up listening to the Spice Girls, in fact I have very fond memories of us singing along to their songs in our bedrooms using hairbrushes as microphones!
When I first heard that Mel C, Mel B, Emma and Geri were reuniting for the Spice World tour I wasn’t 100% sure if I wanted to go. I mean, yeah I loved them when I was younger, but would I still feel the same about them now that I’m an adult? I wasn’t sure, but I knew there was only one way to find out and so I bought a ticket!
As the date got closer and closer I have to admit I became more excited about seeing them. Even more so when I heard that Jess Glynne was supporting them!
We arrived at the stadium around 6pm and when we saw that the roof was open we were a tad worried as there was rain forecast, but we just kept our fingers crossed that the rain would hold off.
Around 7pm, Jess Glynne appeared on stage in a turquoise suit with sparkly top. I thought she looked amazing! Jess sang beautifully and had the entire audience singing along with her. She was super friendly and came across as really down to earth.
Jess sang until 8pm and after a short five minute break some dancers appeared on stage.
There were a group of dancers for each Spice Girl. For example the dancers for Baby Spice wore pink, Sporty Spice’s dancers wore tracksuits etc.
To be honest with you this part was a bit naff! The dancers paraded around the stage as though they were well known reality TV stars and just came across as really up themselves! In fact I think they annoyed quite a few people just wandering around the stage and posing. It was a tad odd to be honest.
Around 8.30pm the Spice Girls appeared on the walkway part of the stage as if from nowhere and the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. It was pretty awesome!
My sister and I were only a few rows away from the stage so we had a fantastic view – apart from when the Spice Girls were on the main stage as we found that the dancers on the walkway part of the stage were blocking our view and lots of other people also thought this.
Mel C, Mel B and Emma put on brilliant performances. They really came across as though they were enjoying every single bit of it. Geri, however, looked awkward and clearly didn’t know the dance moves as you can see in my video below from 7 minutes and 7 seconds when she turns to the male dancer on her left for directions as to what dance moves she should be doing and then can be seen saying thank you to him for reminding her of what she should be doing. I thought this was very poor on Geri’s part as all of the fans have paid good money to come and watch them so the least she could have done was learn the dance moves!
Aside from that, I did really enjoy the performance. As we were so close to the front I can’t say that we noticed any real issues with the sound, but a lot of fans did complain that they couldn’t hear the girls singing. The sound at times was a tad on the poor side, but we found most of it was ok.
It was a shame that they decided to leave the roof of the stadium open as it did rain pretty heavily which meant the fans got drenched and when they released a load of paper confetti into the audience it didn’t mix well with the rain!
The Spice Girls outfits were absolutely amazing. I loved how sparkly they were and I thought they all looked gorgeous, even if I think they had too many costume changes as they left the stage or disappeared underneath it too many times in my opinion, and we were then left to watch the dancers prance around the stage again.
The Spice Girls performed a lot of their most well known songs along with a few my sister and I hadn’t heard before.
Just after 10pm the Spice Girls thanked the audience for their support, said goodbye and left the stage. Naturally, the crowd started to chant “encore, encore, encore” but we were all left bitterly disappointed. The stage lights were turned off and the girls didn’t come out for an encore.
I realise that a lot of this sounds negative, but on the whole I had a really good time and I’m glad I decided to buy tickets to go and see them!
