Plan On Returning To Work After Children? Here’s How!

October 6, 2016

Returning to work after having children can be a daunting task. Whether your career break has been six months or six years, priorities can change and what may have been the perfect job pre-children may not be quite so right after.

What it is you’re looking for?

Whether you are considering returning to an existing role or forging a new path for yourself, it is important that you know what you are looking for in a job. It can be helpful to write out a plan. What do you want from the role? Is flexibility important? Do you want to work from home or in a workplace? Are you looking for a career that will grow and develop or something that is right for the moment? Being clear about what you are looking for, and what you want to achieve when returning to work, can help make sure that the job is the right fit for you and your family.

Positioning Yourself

Hopefully you are returning to the workplace brimming with energy and new ideas but sometimes our confidence has taken a bit of a knocking. Take time to remind yourself of the skills you had before motherhood became your focus. Those skills still exist and they will have been broadened by your experiences of raising children. Do not under value them. Being able to broker a peace treaty is as valuable in a board room as in a nursery. Revisit past achievements and work out how you want to brand yourself. What do you want your future employer to see? How do you want to see yourself? Sell yourself to you, as well as to perspective employers. You have skills and experience, don’t be afraid to show them off. Whilst evaluating your skills, look at areas that may need brushing up. Read up on changes in your field of work, or look into training courses for an area you are interested in. Being proactive helps with confidence and shows what a great asset you are to a team.

Technology Helping

Luckily there is a wealth of information available to support your exciting journey back into work. Websites that act as job aggregators can be extremely useful resources in helping you discover new opportunities near by. Jobrapido, for example, holds huge database of jobs that can be filtered by location and type, alongside blog posts containing useful tips for creating a CV, interview success, workplace politics and everything in between.

Don’t forget about yourself

In your search for that perfect new job do not forget to look after yourself. Make sure you have a good support network and help with all those mother related tasks that will not just vanish because you have returned to work. It is easy to stretch yourself too thin, juggling the needs of your boss as well as the needs of your family, so take time out for yourself. Find a way of decompressing, even if it is only for half an hour on a park bench with a book and a cup of coffee.
