Sometimes being a mum can be pretty lonely. Especially in the first few days and weeks. You’re tired, probably still in your pyjamas and longing for a shower and five minutes to try and make yourself look human again. The last thing you’re probably thinking about is going out and making friends.
Thankfully, you can make friends from the comfort of your own home by simply switching the computer on. There are lots of forums, chat rooms and websites that can offer you support, advice and a friendly face to chat with.
During my husband and I’s IVF treatment I was a member of an online forum. It was a great place for me to be able to document our IVF journey, but to also ask questions and talk to people who were at the same clinic as us online. Sometimes being able to talk to a stranger, someone that you don’t know personally, can be easier than talking to someone you know well.

When I became a mum I started to look for parenting forums online and found that there were loads available. Some of them were specifically tailored for twin mums whereas others were local groups that also offered mums the chance to meet up in person with other mums in their local area.
I think the internet is a great invention. It can help make the world feel like a smaller, friendlier place. One of the things that I liked most about the original fertility forum that I was a part of was the online chat. Being able to log on and chat to someone in the same boat as you instantly was brilliant.
Chat rooms don’t just have to be limited to parenting forums though. Think more of online bingo. As well as being to play games, you can also chat at the same time. I love playing games in my spare time. If there’s nothing on the TV and you just fancy a quiet night in then playing the odd game can be a fun way to pass the time. Just make sure you play responsibly.
I’ve also found that social media can help make you feel less isolated. Especially being a blogger. I’ve met so many people online that I’ve gone on to meet in person and have wonderful relationships with. The internet really is a wonderful thing! Don’t you think so?
