It’s no secret that I enjoy sewing, so it comes as no surprise that my five year old twin girls are following in my footsteps with their love of sewing too.
When I get my sewing machine out, our girls are keen for me to show them what I’m doing. They also love pressing the foot pedal down and helping to feed fabric through the needle.
They’re both very enthusiastic about sewing so when I was offered the chance to review the Cool Maker Sew N’ Style Machine I jumped at the chance.
Aimed at children aged six+, children can magically create their own stylish fashions. The Sew N’ Style Machine comes with stylish, sparkly fabrics, patterns and accessories to create five amazing projects, including a plush unicorn and a glitter pouch. They can even customise their end results with ribbons and glitter fabric accents, and stitch with the style string!
Included in the box is:
Unicorn and butterfly pre-cut projects
Three embellishments (rabbit, flower & butterfly)
2 x pom pom string
Pom pom maker attachment
Elastic (to make a hair scrunchie)
The machine itself is compact, lightweight and takes seconds to set up. You simply need to thread the style string into the top of the machine, down the front and then under the needle, and you’re ready to go.
There’s also a handy draw built into the machine which is great to store the string, templates and fabric etc.
The machine is battery operated which I actually quite like, as it means no wires will get in the way whilst your child is sewing. Sadly, batteries aren’t included so you will need to purchase 4 x AA batteries which just need to go into the base of the machine.
Turning the sewing machine on is simple. Just flick the switch on the side up, and then press the pink button on the bottom right of the machine to start it, then press it again to stop.
M decided to make the unicorn plush and R opted for the butterfly plush. The handy booklet tells you everything you need to know to get your machine started and how to complete each project.
The first thing we needed to do was pop the template out for the butterfly and unicorn so that we could make a ‘tutu’ for the unicorn and some glittery wings for the butterfly.
I cut out the fabric for the girls, but they did all the rest. M easily managed to place the glitter fabric under the needle, along with the fabric for the unicorn so that she could sew the tutu on.
M found it easy to guide the fabric under the needle and did so with ease, without any of my help! We found it really convenient that the start/stop button is handily located on the front of the machine as it means starting and stopping the machine is quick and easy.
Once, M had sewn on the tutu and sewn the back onto the unicorn plush, all that was left to do was stuff the unicorn plush and then close it up.
As you can see, M is very happy with her unicorn plush and she’s very proud of the fact that she managed to make it all by herself.
As mentioned above, R opted to make the butterfly plush.
Like, M, R found the machine very easy to use. There’s a handy light located above the needle so it’s easier to see the area that you’re working on.
After making their plush toys, R said that she wanted to make a pom pom. The Sew N’ Style machine comes with a pom pom maker attachment. This simply inserts into the side of the machine.
You need to cut 8″ of wool and place to one side for later before wrapping the rest of your wool around the pom pom maker attachment. Then use the 8″ of wool to tie a knot around the middle, before removing the wool from the pom pom attachment, tying a double knot and then cutting the wool to turn it into a pom pom.
It was very easy for R to do all by herself. Both R and M are very pleased with the Cool Maker Sew N’ Style machine, as am I. I think it’s great value for money at just £23.99 from Argos (price correct at time of publication).
The machine is simple and easy to use which is just what you need for children. There’s no fuss or faffing around. It really is easy to use and everything you need is included.
Overall, we’re very very happy with the Cool Maker Sew N’ Style machine and we would 100% recommend it!
