There are two types of people who will try to tell you what to expect when you have your first child.
There’s the “you will LOVE it, it’s so much easier than you think it’s going to be”- don’t listen to them.
And then there’s the, “DON’T DO IT. YOU WILL NEVER SLEEP AGAIN!- Don’t listen to those either!
The truth is, it’s a mixture of the two - it’s both challenging and rewarding.
So, here 10 things that people neglect to mention about becoming a parent to help you out a little!
- It’s ok to ask for help
Nobody tells you this, but you ARE allowed to ask for help.
You feel the baby is your responsibility, but just because you’ve had a baby, you are not expected to know everything.
Trying to do everything on your own will only lead to unnecessary stress and no doubt panic.
Don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family to help you out and ask other mums for tips.
- You need to become an expert on all things poo
You won’t believe the things you’ll have to know about poo. Nothing can really prepare for this, but if you’re squeamish now, you won’t be for long!
- Grandparents will try to take over
Your parents always know better, and when you have a child this doesn’t change!
Remember that this is your child and that you’ve already learnt what to do (and what not to do) from them!
However, humour them a little, after all the free childcare is plenty of compensation!
4. You will become overwhelmed with emotion
After an intense day of parenting, you may find yourself overcome with emotion.
It can sneak up on you when you least expect it…On the toilet, for example!
You’re not sure why, it might be because there’s no child tugging on your leg, or it might be because you finally get a chance to sit down!
Just take a deep breath, and remember you are not on your own!
- What you look like won’t matter anymore
You used to love dressing up and was obsessed with your convertible, yet it’s just not practical anymore!
You used to spend hours getting ready, and you swore you couldn’t do it in less than half an hour.
You will soon learn to shower, dress and do you hair and makeup in 10!
As a parent, you need to look at things in a different way – what will make your life easier?
You may actually find yourself choosing practicality over style!
- Breast feeding is a LOT harder than it looks
There are lots of problems with breast-feeding and many women really do struggle!
Don’t feel guilty if you have problems breast-feeding, it may get easier with time, or it may not be right for you at all!
Remember everyone is different.
How could your darling little boy or girl embarrass you? They’re only children.
But. trust me, they can!
When your little one points at a lady on the bus and loudly proclaims, “She looks like a witch” there’s not really much you can do!
To be fair, she did look like a witch!
Children can be a little TOO honest, another particular favourite is telling everybody about “Mummy’s wobbly belly”.
It’s hard to see the funny side of that one!
Don’t worry I’m sure you’ll get revenge when they reach their teens!
- Some things are impossible to explain to children
You’re not an idiot; you might even be able to hold your own at the pub quiz.
However, your child will ask you questions you’d never even thought of having to answer, and you will feel obliged to answer!
You will be asked things like “What is time?” and “Why is water wet?”, not to mention a flurry of human body questions!
Don’t worry; you will quickly learn to think on your feet.
- You will be judged by other parents
The bane of any parents’ life is the constant judging. Everybody, including people without children (and sometimes even strangers!) seems to have an opinion on how you should raise your children!
However, try to take it on the chin and not let other people rile you up.
It is your child therefore it is your responsibility and no-one else’s business!
- You get to be a kid again!
As an adult, we can spend our time being far too serious and getting caught in the daily grind to really take time out to have a laugh.
However, as a parent it’s your job to play, sing, build dens, play out in the garden, go to the zoo, and nobody can prepare you for the awesome reality of this!
You have the ultimate excuse to release your inner child!
Embrace it, pretty soon they’ll be teenagers, and you’ll be left wondering if you’re still allowed to play with the Lego!
Finally, don’t stress.
You’ll spend the first few years teaching them to walk and talk, but before you know it, you’ll be telling them to sit down and shut up!
What do you wish someone told you before you become a parent?
